Works under the direction of the University DSO and the Boating Safety Committee to ensure safe research boating instruction and provides assistance in the implementation of the Scientific Boating Program, Scientific Diving Program and Dive Safety Program. Maintains all records and documentation of the safety of FIU research vessels and serves as a Lead Diver or working diver during research diving operations.
Provides assistance in the implementation of the Scientific Boating Program, Scientific Diving Program and Dive Safety Program, including leading all-hands meetings for training and informational purposes.
Maintains all records and documentation of the safety of FIU research vessels and the training and experience of FIU staff engaged in research and instructional boating activities.
Approves electronic float plans for the use of FIU vessels and assures those float plans are in compliance with boating safety policy as set by the FIU Boating Safety Committee.
Maintains records of float plans.
Serves as the coordinator of investigations of boating safety incident, accidents, and violations of approved policies.
Manages the dive locker including: assigning and tracking equipment to FIU scientific divers, maintaining and operating the dive compressors.
Maintains the required documentation for inventory control and equipment inspections.
Maintains and fills all SCUBA cylinders.
Provides administrative support associated with documenting the training and experience of FIU scientific divers.
Maintains all the life support equipment associated with scientific diving activities.
Conducts routine maintenance of all diving records, dive gear and collecting equipment.
Under supervision of the Dive Safety Officer (DSO), provides training in the use of diving equipment. Ensures compliance with safety measures and guidelines.
Provides assistance in the implementation of the Scientific Diving Program and dive safety programs.
Maintains a 24-hour readiness plan to respond to accidents or injury which may occur to faculty, staff or graduate students involved in diving and boating safety incidents.
Assists with the investigation regarding property damage, personal injuries and accidents.
Serves as a Lead Diver or working diver during research diving operations.
Travels to Aquarius Reef Base in Islamorada, Florida, and other locations, to assist with research and training boating and diving exercises when needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Works under the direction of the University DSO and the Boating Safety Committee to ensure safe boating instruction.
Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
Conduct annual inspections of all FIU vessels.
